An Elizabeefan burger and an Eton Mess milkshake? Count me in!

First things first – get to Byron for the Jubilee menu before it’s too late.

Born in 2017, after visiting the USA with a mission, Byron Founder Tom Byng came back to work with Head Chef Fred Smith to create burgers driven by the belief that ‘nothing beats a big juicy burger’. Byron source their meat from their family-owned butcher in Yorkshire. Their patties of Aberdeen Angus beef consist of quality flank, chuck, brisket and short rib cuts. Byron has always been one of my favourite burger restaurants in the UK and I was very excited to give their Jubilee menu a taste!

Let’s kick off with the Eton mess shake.

Made with clotted cream ice cream (I’m an absolute sucker for clotted cream), strawberry coulis, and fresh strawberries, topped with a whole meringue nest and all essential whipped cream. My first comment is that because it’s served in a smaller glass, compared to the usual steel milkshake cups, it wasn’t totally practical to break through the whole meringue. You’re meant to break through the meringue to make your own Eton mess, but this just ended up making a bit of a mess (pardon the pun). Besides that, it was a really good milkshake. The strawberry was not too overwhelming and the bits of meringue added a crunchy, fun element.

My friend and I each had the Elizabeefan Burger which consisted of a 6oz Aberdeen Angus beef patty, slow-cooked roast beef brisket, Red Leicester cheese, watercress, pickled red onions, and horseradish mayo. This was accompanied by cheesy fries, sweet potato fries, and chicken strips (yes, we were starving).

I can confidently say it was one of the best burgers I have ever eaten.

The beef brisket stole the show. It was packed with flavour and so tender- just the thought of it now makes my mouth water. The Red Leicester cheese and watercress balanced the flavour from the beef patty and beef brisket. The pickled onions were not too sharp and so didn’t overwhelm my palette, instead adding a hint of tanginess. Most importantly, the bun did not break up or get messy with all these elements in there. A true sign of a brilliant burger.

Both fries we ordered were yum. The cheesy fries at Byron are my personal favourite side. The chicken strips were good, but not as crispy as I was hoping for.

The service was excellent! Everyone was very friendly and attentive throughout the meal to make sure everything was okay and to see whether we wanted anything else. Smiling faces all around are what I like to see!

Overall, if it isn’t already obvious, the Elizabeefan burger was phenomenal, and you need to get to your nearest Byron before the end of July when they stop the Jubilee menu. The Eton mess shake was definitely worth a try and met my Jubilee expectations. Byron gets a 9/10 from me!
