I was invited to sample Wagamama’s vegan answer to fish and chips – a special limited edition item for Veganuary.
I also tried a few of their vegan sides. 50% of Wagamama’s regular menu is plant-based so there’s lots to choose from!
We started out with the edamame beans (always amazing and a big hit with my toddler daughter, who came along for the ride).
Next, we tried the vegan ribs, which are made from mushroom and soy protein. These had a satisfying, meaty texture and the sticky sauce they came in was incredible. This will definitely be a regular addition to my order from now on! We also had some bang bang cauliflower, which was very fiery and moreish.
The main tempura “fish” was an impressive blend of rice, pea and soya proteins.
It all came together to create a flavour that’s not precisely like fish but is an extremely pleasant, satisfyingly solid alternative. I particularly liked the sides of katsu sauce to dip and the smashed edamame. They were much nicer than mushy peas – very minty and refreshing. This was served over bang bang sweet potatoes, which were perhaps a little too hot and sweet for my taste along with the katsu, as well as a Japanese take on a tartare.
The whole meal was delightful and it was great to see a vegan main crafted with such care. I’m definitely going back to try it again before it disappears from the menu at the end of the month!
