Review: The Store, Autumn Menu

23rd November 2024 by Nicola Barretto Leave a Comment AD - Invite, BlogAutumn Menu/ CENTRAL OXFORD/ HOTEL/ Oxford/ REVIEW

Oxford’s newest hotel has launched its Autumn menu.

There’s nothing like a solid autumn menu to bring some life to the colder, darker months. Before I get into all the food, I must say how stunning the Treadwell restaurant looks with the recent addition of the illustrations all over by artist Samme Snow. They add so much character to the restaurant; we were obsessed!

Cocktails to start were a must!

The cocktail menu is limited and is focused on classic cocktails. Naturally, I went for a mojito and Chiara opted for a mule.

No complaints here, both were refreshing and well-balanced. One thing to point out is that the cocktail prices are quite steep, £15 a pop. They do use premium spirits though.

There was such a great range of starters to pick from…

I was torn between the tacos and the bao buns but, I had to go with the prawn & white crab tacos with Marie Rose sauce. This was super fresh and light. I loved that the tacos were freshly made – they were crispy which meant I made a massive mess eating them but it was worth it. Very well-balanced flavors.

Chiara loved the spinach & gruyere filo cigars

C: I was immediately drawn in by the fact this dish was called a ‘filo cigar.’ I couldn’t resist ordering to find out what exactly that meant. I wasn’t disappointed! The perfect combination of an external crispy crunch, with a soft and oozing centre made up of a spinach and cheesy mix. Delish. The smoked figs were SUCH a welcomed surprise, such a zingy punch of flavour. My only comment would be to add more of them to the dish!

Let’s talk about the mains…

As a steak girl, I could not resist going for the Chuck-eye steak, which came with fries, and I chose the chimichurri sauce. I have never had, let alone heard of, Chuck-eye but this cut was so juicy and tender, I honestly demolished it. Chimichurri always hits the spot and as someone who always goes for pepper sauce, it was nice to have a different sauce with my steak.

The fries were so well salted- a very simple thing but I felt like I needed to mention it as places don’t always get this right. My extra side of choice was the sesame-glazed carrots. These were tasty but I could not really taste the sesame in the dish.

Chiara went for the pasta (quite out of character)

C: I rarely order pasta when I’m out, as we cook it a lot at home and honestly, unless on holiday, I’m not often blown away by restaurant pasta. But as the winter nights have been getting colder, I was really craving a big fat bowl of good pasta, so I ordered the pan-seared red mullet pappardelle, shaved fennel,
langoustine bisque. As warned by our waiter, this was a BIG portion. The fish was nicely cooked and the pappardelle were al dente. It was a nice dish, but for £26 I think it needs a bit more to it. The sauce could be a bit saucier, and think it needs something to cut through the stodge of the pasta, something zesty or hot, perhaps.

This dessert now lives in my head RENT FREE

I cannot tell you how delicious and wholesome this dessert was.

Marmalade glazed chocolate croissant butter pudding- it just sounded amazing. This was the recommended dessert.

It stole the show from the whole meal. Such a great autumn dessert that was well balanced with the notes of orange complimenting the richness of the chocolate and butter.

Chiara went for the ‘Old Fashioned” cocktail inspired sticky toffee pudding

C: Woodford whiskey sauce and ginger ice cream? Sign me up, baby! The whisky really hit me in the face, a real punch and pick me up after my pasta slump. This was delicious, smooth, rich, creamy. Quite a hefty portion though – perhaps something to share rather than to yourself (though no judgement, just admiration, if you can manage it on your own!)

Thank you for looking after us, Treadwell.

The Treadwell restaurant is such a great date night venue, with all the right vibes. I will not stop going on about how stunning the venue looks with the illustrations. The level of detail won me over, with nods and hints to Oxford and its history running through the doodles.

Service was great throughout the night. We were well looked after and any questions or recommendations were offered easily, which added to the overall experience.

If you are looking for the perfect date night venue, The Store is an ideal spot.
