Chloe’s, which opened in July 2023, has already cemented its place as a culinary gem in Charlbury. From her storied journey at East Oxford’s Magdalen Arms, the much-loved Oxfork, and Farm Ed to hosting intimate pop-ups, Chloe’s latest venture feels like the culmination of years of expertise, passion, and love for food.
Chloe’s ethos revolves around sustainability and showcasing the best local ingredients, from Missing Bean coffee to Saltpig charcuterie, Bruern Flour, and produce from King Stone Dairy, Church Lane, and Kitchen Garden People. The latter plays a pivotal role in shaping her ever-evolving menu, with its seasonal vegetables and fruits forming the foundation of her dishes. Her commitment to seasonality shines through every creation
The set menu, priced at a modest £35 with an optional £5 glass of house wine (which is an absolute steal), promises inventive and bold flavours. And oh, how it delivers.
The evening began with Chloe’s Bread with Rosemary & Lemon, Pickles, and Beetroot Borani. The bread was beautifully crusty and fragrant, while the pickles and ferments—think salty cherry and celeriac—packed a punch of umami brilliance. Subtle beetroot borani complemented these with an earthy balance, and a touch of Jerusalem artichoke marinated in turmeric stole the show.
The Kitchen Garden People Salad was, quite simply, unforgettable. Roasted squash, sweet onions, pears, sharp stilton, and candied nuts and seeds combined into a dish so divine we joked about wanting to be “buried in it.” The squash was roasted to perfection, the lettuce delicate and fresh, and the combination of sweet, salty, and creamy flavours was utterly addictive.
For mains, the Organic Chicken Stew stood out for its boldness and balance. With Saltpig salami, aioli, green beans, beetroot gratin, roast potatoes, lemon, and cavolo nero, every bite was nourishing yet exciting. The chicken was moist, the textures varied, and the aioli added a touch of indulgence. It’s comfort food at its finest, crafted with flair.
Dessert was a choice between a Little Chocolate Pot and a Moreton Cheese Plate. The chocolate pot, topped with white chocolate, hazelnuts, and a marmalade cookie, offered a decadent yet perfectly portioned finish. For cheese lovers, the Moreton Cheese with Chloe’s membrillo and oatcakes felt like a delightful ode to local produce.
Chloe’s is more than a meal—it’s an experience. The warm, cosy setting is peppered with thoughtful touches. The second sitting at 8 pm was bustling, with every table full. A power cut mid-meal only added to the charm, as candlelight transformed the space into something even more magical. Leaving to the sound of church bells in picturesque Charlbury was the perfect ending.
Chloe’s menu is a triumph of flavour, boldness, and comfort. It’s food that nurtures and heals, leaving you ready to face the world again. Whether it’s the genius pickles, nourishing broth, or that life-changing salad, Chloe’s proves that local, seasonal cooking can be anything but boring.
Charlbury is lucky to have her, and so are we. Don’t wait—book your table, grab a fork, and prepare to be wowed.
