With our favourite eateries re-opening and restrictions lifting, we thought it was the perfect time to give you a rundown of just a snapshot of what Witney in Oxfordshire has to offer.
The best places to eat in Witney? Let’s start with the heavy hitters…
The Lamb Inn
This small independent gastro pub, found in the dip in Crawley, feels like our best-kept secret. Before the pandemic, we were frequenting this place almost weekly and have never been disappointed. The customer service is warm and familiar and the food second to none.
The Carpenters Arm’s
Who would have thought you’d find an authentic Cambodian in a pub in Witney. A bustling restaurant and takeaway where the tables are always full and a takeaway queue almost reaches the door. Looking for fresh, flavoursome cuisine look no further. Also great for gluten-free or vegan.
The Plough
This is a lovely family-run community pub, always warm and welcoming – like entering your own lounge. Often running events that pull a crowd and with a long pub beer garden for warm summer nights with its very own outdoor bar. If you’re lucky enough to snag a table on the decking, you’ll also hear the river running by. They often do food deals too; we’re big fans of the fish and chips 2-4-1 offer on Fridays and the burgers are great. Unbeatable grub for a great price.
The best coffee and cake in Witney
Eden Cafe
Say hello to Witney’s favourite vegan hang out, serving delicious Allpress Coffee and a vast array of homemade cakes. You can also grab a toastie to go, or enjoy a lunch in their laid back bohemian vibed dining area. This little street is also home to Wasto selling all your favourite foods package free.
Hunter’s Cake Cafe
We’re almost on first name terms here, Hunter’s has almost single-handedly got us through three lockdowns. Now doing both local and nationwide delivery, you can share this amazing cake with friends and family far and wide. We are massive fans of the chocolate cake, expect the perfect ratio of buttercream to sponge.
Coffeesmith
Our favourite place to grab a coffee, serving up Origin Coffee with a friendly smile. They also have Sourdough Revolution bread delivered throughout the week which is hard to resist. They occasionally serve an apple and custard cake which is otherworldly! Enjoy your coffee and cake in their lovely alfresco courtyard or stop and watch the world go by from the front of the shop.
The Edge Eatery
Still fairly new on the block, but quickly becoming a power-house, serving brunch and coffee in the day and naughty takeaways in the evening. If you’re looking for a feel-good feed up, the Edge is guaranteed to deliver. Get in their quick with your orders because they sell out quickly. Read our review of The Edge Eatery.
UE
UE have two coffee shops, our favourite is up on the Windrush Industrial estate which is also home to their roastery, where you can see everything in action as you sample the wares. Expect a cool warehouse vibe, delicious coffee and if you’re lucky enough to grab a leather armchair you’ll be happy for hours. Also selling local produce and running their own pizza nights which we’ve yet to try!
Pobi
This espresso bar sits within Pobi, Witney’s very own independent artisan bakery, serving up an array of freshly made bread and tasty treats. We often nip in for a Routes Coffee and cinnamon bun, but we’ve also been replenishing our hot cross bun supplies here, as they’re hands down the best in town!
The best takeaway food in Witney
Fat Lil’s
In the day serving Routes Coffee, at the weekend pancakes and even home to Witney’s newest Italian deli Acqua Salata, which is a dangerous place to stop. We almost bought up the entire shop and it was all insanely good! In the evenings, you can expect generously topped thin based pizzas, burgers and Quesadillas. If you’re feeling lazy, they even deliver to the door! Read our full review of Fat Lil’s.
Sartorelli’s
THE BEST PIZZA IN OXFORDSHIRE (according to Roo) at an amazing price of £5.00. Get yourself a tasty sourdough pizza and, if you’re so inclined, stock up on ale at the same time. Don’t expect to see an extensive menu of options, this is classic flavours done well.
Marmaris Kebab and Pizza Shop
This may seem like the anomaly on the list but don’t knock it until you’ve tried it. This unassuming takeaway serves up highly-rated quality meals and the reliable customer service makes this a regular go-to. Chunky pieces of grilled goodness with crispy skinny fries and fresh salad, what’s not to like?! We’re always amazed how they can deliver this across town and yet it still arrives hot and fresh.
Suwanna
Looking for more of a high-end takeaway treat? Suwanna Thai hits all the right notes. A bit more on the pricey side but worth every penny. Our order consists of the following staples: sweetcorn cakes, pad thai, sweet and sour chicken Thai style, sticky rice, double cooked chips, and don’t forget their Thai crackers! Their lovely front of house is happy to take your requests; we often ask for chilli chips which aren’t on the menu and she’s always happy to oblige with a smile.
