Well I venture far and wide into the Cotswolds, Oxford and the Chilterns on my foodie crusades, but there’s nowhere that comes close to the quality of fayre served at The Killingworth Castle in Wootton, near Woodstock and Blenheim Palace.
Landlord – restauranteur – hotelier Jim Alexander & Chef Adam Brown are forever innovating and the latest result from this top Cotswolds team is their excellent value Thursday Night Supper Club. A couple can now enjoy 2 ‘chef-selected’ a la carte dishes plus a bottle of house red or white wine for £35 per person. The courses are from the main evening menu, including a wholly acceptable bottle of house wine. In our case, we enjoyed the quaffable, fruity yet well-balanced Lobita Loca Verdejo 2021 from Spain.

Between 6-7pm you’ll get to enjoy the same high standard of cooking as the famous tasting menu and the legendary Sunday lunches but at an affordable, honest price. You also get to relax in the timeless ambiance of the cosy bar and restaurant areas. Jim is always brimming with enthusiasm and you’ll have to travel a very long way to find service that is more genuine or heartfelt.
Adam Brown has a skilled team of young chefs so even on his occasional night off, you’re guaranteed to feast on the very tastiest of seasonal delights. They’re also all celebrating their recent award of 3 AA Rosettes!

So back to the Supper Club … we enjoyed an intriguing starter of heritage beetroot with cow’s curd in a buttermilk and parsley sauce. Heaven sent and that’s from me an avowed beetroot agnostic!
Mains was a top quality, chunky cut of Pork Ribeye. So juicy and moist served with a prune & French bean combination and topped with fresh chanterelles mushrooms. Again I don’t eat much pork but this was definitely a new dish for my culinary scrapbook.

The Killy sources its food as local and seasonal as possible to reduce food miles and always works with independent artisanal suppliers to reduce the number of deliveries needed. Adam uses meat with high welfare standards and fish from MSC-certified sources. The Killy has been awarded 3 Stars Organic by the Soil Association for an unswerving commitment to getting organic food on the menu.

And to top off this outstanding Supper Club, you could not fault the sumptuous vanilla pannacotta with fresh local strawberries.
Even the most satiated diner should be able to squeeze this beauty in!
But do remember to book ahead and arrive at ‘The Killy’ for ideally a prompt 6.30pm Thursday Supper Club start as everyone gets served togetherish and you’ll be home well nourished by 9pm.
You know it makes sense!
