There are some pubs that just feel right the moment you walk in, and The Greyhound is one of them.
We arrived to a warm welcome from the team, a gentle Saturday buzz, and the kind of cosy, fire-lit atmosphere that instantly softens the shoulders. Most tables were full, the rooms varied and characterful, and the whole place hummed with that relaxed, lived-in charm.
Dog-friendly? Exceptionally.
A handful of visiting pups, including Moose, lounged happily under tables, with staff offering water bowls, treats, and plenty of fuss. Having recently celebrated their 10-year anniversary, The Greyhound operates like the sort of well-loved local that knows exactly what makes guests (and their dogs) feel at home.

Drinks worth exploring
A solid lineup spans local beers, a little craft cameo from Australia, rarely-spotted Murphy’s stout, and an alcohol-free pilsner on tap. It’s a thoughtful selection – classic, interesting, and inclusive.

Starters
Crispy Duck Egg with Celeriac Purée – perfectly runny centre, crisp exterior, silky purée and tender celeriac chunks. Hugely satisfying – winter comfort in a bowl.
Partridge & Pheasant Rillette with Pear & Sourdough – generously portioned and beautifully balanced. The pear lifts the richness with a sweet, clean edge, and the chicory brings a bright, sharp contrast. Could’ve happily done with a little more sourdough as the rillette portion was so generous, but the flavours were spot on.

For mains, Charlie went for the venison burger, which was lean but juicy, flavourful without heaviness, and paired with a crisp, fresh celeriac slaw. We’re both obsessed with celeriac so this went down especially well. The chips tick every box a pub chip should.
I went for the game pie, which was a standout. The suet top was golden and crisp, sheltering tender game in a rich filling. The buttery mash was smooth, comforting and exactly as it should be, with perfectly cooked green beans bringing freshness and bite. Beautifully plated, too. I took about 400 photos of the pie alone, so pretty and beautifully presented!

We absolutely did not have room for dessert…
So naturally, we still ordered the Apple Crumble Soufflé (new from mid-November). This was a clever twist on a classic – super light and fluffy, apple-perfumed, with a satisfying crumble crunch top. Utterly delicious and absolutely worth saving space for (or being completely full and ordering it anyway, like we did)
The Greyhound is a gem of a country pub: warm, welcoming, quietly confident, and serving thoughtful plates that hit all the right notes. Whether you’re dropping in mid-walk or just seeking a cosy, well-fed afternoon, it’s the sort of place that makes you want to linger a little longer (and they also have rooms, so you can linger for a whole night if you don’t fancy getting back in the car after – what a treat!)
