After being closed for the last few months, Bangkok House’s new location has reopened!
Bangkok House has been serving authentic Thai flavours in Oxford since 1992.
My first visit to Bangkok House was in early 2024, and I really enjoyed the food. I was sad to see them close, until I realised that they were temporarily closed as they were moving to a new venue which is pretty much right across from where they used to be.
The welcoming and homely feel is something I love about family-run businesses, and that is exactly what you get at Bangkok House! We were welcomed by Wantana, who took over the business from her parents, who established it in 1992. It was so great to hear the story and see her passion to keep the family business alive!

Mocktails to kick off the meal
We went for a strawberry daiquiri (I think.. the name of this one completely slipped my mind) and a virgin mojito. Mocktails were the way to go on this occasion as they were sorting out some things with their alcohol license, which is hopefully in place now.
No complaints here, both were refreshing and tasty. The little umbrella on top made me feel like I was on holiday!
Went for the mixed starters to try a bit of everything
This sharing platter consisted of: prawn tempura, pork dumpling, fish cake, vegetable spring roll, and chicken satay with sweet chili, fish sauce, and peanut sauce dipping sauces.

Prawn tempura and chicken satay were the favourites
This is a great option to try a bit of everything. Everything was delicious, but our favourites had to be the prawn tempura and the chicken satay. The tempura was crispy and wasn’t oily- something that tends to happen more often than not with tempura. The satay was accompanied by a peanut dipping sauce to give it that extra kick and burst of flavour.
Time for the mains…

Thai curries honestly never disappoint
I do love a curry, and the panang was one of the recommendations, so I went for the chicken panang with jasmine rice.
Thinking about the amount of flavour from this dish makes my mouth water.
There was a lot of chicken, unlike some curries that make you fish around to simply get some of the meat in it. Portion was generous and meant I had leftovers for the next day.. bonus!
Bold and fresh flavours, what more do you want? Would order this again without a doubt.

Another recommended dish for seafood lovers
My friend opted for the stir-fried seafood with chili oil.
Prawns and squid were plentiful and cooked to perfection- no one likes rubbery seafood! The sauce was light but flavoursome- tasted like a mix of fish sauce with soya sauce, topped off with a hint of chilli.
Once again, delicious.
Somehow, we made room for dessert.. for content purposes, of course.

If you are not getting the mango sticky rice after a Thai meal, what are you doing?
Mango is one of, if not my favourite, fruits, so this had to be ordered.
I must say this was not my favorite sticky rice, as the rice felt a bit overcooked/mushy. I would have liked the coconut flavour to be a bit stronger, but the mango itself was nice and sweet.
First time trying Pandan cake with coconut cream
Pandan cake is a light and fluffy cake, popular in Southeast Asia, that gets its distinctive green color and unique flavor from pandan leaves. Served with coconut cream, the sweet aroma was not overly sweet, and its soft texture made it a light alternative to the mango sticky rice.
As a coconut lover, I was very happy that this was filled with coconut cream. Also, how pretty does it look with that vibrant green!

A wholesome meal with authentic, bold flavours and a homely feel.
My visit to Bangkok House made me want to get on a plane to Thailand. From the incredible food to wholesome service and decor of the restaurant, this is an authentic Thai restaurant that you need to add to your eating out list. Hearing the origin story of the restaurant from Wantana was so lovely, and it’s great to see them keep their family legacy alive in Oxford by bringing authentic Thai food to us.
Besides the fact that there are a ton of options to pick from, I should also add that it is a great value for money. Somewhere I would recommend for a group wanting to share a few dishes and try a bit of everything, because there are so many options on the menu- we took a while to make up our minds!
Safe to say that it has made it onto my list of favourites.
