Being honest, I couldn’t play it cool when Five Little Pigs invited us to try their new all-day dining menu. Even before the hype from Jay Rayner’s great review, this place has been high on my list for a while.
The bright colours and fresh decor immediately makes you happy to be there.
We went to Five Little Pigs on a boiling hot day, and it was a really refreshing spot to escape the heat for a few hours. The cocktail menu will have you drooling – it took me ages to choose but eventually went with the Gooseberry Smash which I highly recommend, the lime and thyme are a match made in heaven.
To start, we ordered the cured Oxfordshire trout, which comes with smoked roe butter and crispbread and the scotch egg, accompanied by rhubarb ketchup.
The array of colours that arrived on our plates were to die for.
Everything was so fresh and vibrant, and tasted even better when you know they source all their produce locally. The trout was gorgeously smooth and the smoked roe butter went with it perfectly.
The scotch egg was exactly how you want it to be- runny in the middle, crispy on the outside and seasoned to perfection. Rhubarb ketchup, who would’ve thought it, but it worked.
For mains, we ordered the roast hake, the lamb rump, and the summer tomatoes on the side.
The roast hake fell apart and melted in the mouth. The queen beefs and fig-leaf aioli complemented the fish well, and it was exactly the dish I needed on such a hot day. Fresh fresh fresh. It was also way more filling than I thought it would be, so was glad we just ordered a small side.
The lamp rump was juicy and cooked to perfection. It came with local cherries and crispy potatoes. The cherries cut through the meaty flavour and added a lovely sharpness to the dish. The summer tomatoes were a lovely and simple addition to our mains, and a reminder that good tomatoes DO exist in England (just me who finds supermarket tomatoes tasteless most of the year?)
As always, no we didn’t have room for dessert, yes we ordered it anyway.
We shared the homemade doughnut, and the key lime pie. Both were incredible. The key lime pie was the perfect combination of crumbly, creamy, and sharp. The doughnut was the real winner though, it arrived still warm and the sugar melted in my mouth. Stunning- I want 4000 more, please.
The food was great, the service was great and the decor was great. The team behind this place are super passionate (interview with the chef coming soon!) and if you don’t go and book a table now, you’re missing out big time.
