The Star x Moonie’s do pizza!

27th February 2026 by Chiara Nunzet Leave a Comment AD - Invite, Blog, RecipesEAST OXFORD/ INDEPENDENTS/ NEWS/ Oxford/ pizza/ pub/ REVIEW

Before I even start this review I need to confess that before this evening, I had never been to the Star.

I KNOW. It’s unacceptable. I don’t know why. I blame the ridiculous amount of pubs in Oxford (a good thing, obvs). However, I have admired it from afar, and heard very good things about its very good vibes, so when my friend was having birthday drinks there the same week they reached out asking if I’d like to try the pizzas, it felt serendipitous.

The Star has, up until recently, not offered food, meaning you could get the bevs in from them and then order takeaway from anywhere else to be delivered there which, to be fair, is very fun and easy. However, fairly recently Moonie’s Pizza joined the gang. And yes, I love the stars and moon theme too.

It’s a nice and concise pizza menu, with all the classics as well as some specials. You order at the bar, are given a buzzer, and then you go and collect it from a window in the garden. Something I hope they never take off the menu is the pint of garlic doughballs (£5). An actual pint, incredibly generously stuffed, and showered with parmesan. They were pillowy, doughy, perfection. Loved them. Inhaled them. I believe there’s a deal where you can get a pint of them and a pint of beer for a tenner – dreamy.

The pizzas were also delicious, we ordered a few of The Regular which is a marg (£10), a Pestogram (£12), and an OX4 Cheese (£12.50). We were all starving, so these pizzas were demolished. The flavours were great, the dough was bouncy and crispy, they arrived steaming hot, presented nicely (loving this new swirly pesto vibe places are doing lately, looks v cute). We also got the hot honey and garlic dips – the perfect accompaniment for your lonely crusts. If you’re on a small table, they even have pizza risers so you can have lots of pizzas on top of each other – genius.

My friends shared some wine and I ordered a Deya IPA – fresh, delish, and no bank breaking prices here. You love to see it.

Safe to say, I will be back to The Star. I can just imagine how buzzing that garden must get in the summer, so with pizzas and dough balls in the mix, it’ll be a hot spot for sure. Had to end with the pic of Roy – this just sums up the funny vibes of the pub.
