Those of us who have been around Oxford for a while, will remember Taste Tibet being at Gloucester Green market. I fondly remember those times, as I could get my Taste Tibet fix in the centre of Oxford on my lunch hour!
I’ve always been a long-standing fan of the food, who couldn’t be with the amazing dishes Yeshi and the team pull together?! So a few years ago when they secured their own ‘bricks and mortar’ premises I was delighted – along with half of Oxford I think! It’s great that the familiar faces of Yeshi and Julie are never far away either.

Visiting Taste Tibet is always a great experience, from the warm welcome, amazing food, a great menu, with those familiar favourites, as well as brilliant specials – I recently had the pork belly, and it was outstanding!
I feel this is one of the few restaurants I visit where I genuinely feel conflicted on what I am going to choose before I get to the door – I am usually thinking about it before I’ve even left my house! As you might guess, the reason for this dilemma is down to how fantastic the food is. Not only this, but how consistently it hits the spot every time.

The choice for me always comes down to 2 menu items, the chicken biryani or the ‘feast for one’. The feast for one allows you to have a selection of 2 curries as well as dal, rice, and a choice of momo which is a great deal and gives the chance to try a couple of dishes. The ‘famous chicken’ curry is a staple for my order, as it’s just so good and bursting with flavour. I tend to mix it up with the second choice with picking something new or the classic chickpea and spinach.
Next, talking about the biryani. This is a thing of beauty. I can’t put into words how much I love this dish.
The chicken is always remarkably tender, the rice is perfectly spiced and the dish overall is so moist, I didn’t think a rice dish could be like that. I’ve come across many a biryani that’s just dry or under spiced where the one from Taste Tibet, is incredible every time. It is a must-have in my opinion.

You have to try the momos!
You have the choice of beef or vegan, both are excellent, but I do tend to end up with the beef ones. A few times a year, Yeshi breaks out the big pan paella style pan, where he crisps up the bottom of the momo, this is something you need to try!
Something I can’t neglect to mention is the chilli oil they have on the tables. This is something I always mix into my curry and have on top of a momo. Do beware of the quantity you put in your dish, it’s hot! On a couple of occasions, I have gone a bit overboard. They also sell this in jars to take home.
