Review: Indian Summer Soiree at Waterside Café

11th September 2024 by Holly and Rachel Leave a Comment Blog, New Restaurants, NewsINDEPENDENTS/ NEWS/ Oxford/ restaurant/ REVIEW

Waterside Café, located at Farmoor Reservoir, recently celebrated its first anniversary under new ownership with a delightful event that truly captured the essence of community and good food.

The “Tikka and Tadka” Indian Summer Soiree was a night to remember, featuring a three-course meal that showcased the rich flavors of Indian cuisine in a beautiful setting.

The evening began with a starter that set the tone for what was to come: Samosa Chaat. This dish was a perfect blend of textures and flavors. The samosa, crispy on the edges, sat on a bed of spiced chickpeas that provided just the right amount of heat. The dish was further elevated by the crunchiness of a Sev (akin to Bombay mix) and the surprising sweetness of pomegranate seeds, making it a standout start to the meal.

For the main course…

We were treated to a beautifully prepared Butter Chicken. This dish was a true testament to the art of slow cooking. The chicken was incredibly tender, melting in the mouth, and the sauce was rich and flavorful without being overwhelming. Paired with a thin, yet flavorsome naan bread, perfectly cooked rice, and a fresh salad of pickled carrot, beetroot, onions, and coriander mixed with homemade chaat masale.

The meal concluded with a sweet twist on a classic: Gulab Jamun Cheesecake. This dessert was a delightful surprise, blending the traditional flavors of Gulab Jamun with the familiar texture of a cheesecake. The base, made from sponge cake rather than the usual biscuit, offered a unique twist. To make it even more special, the cheesecake was garnished with fragrant rose petals and crunchy pistachios, adding both visual appeal and a touch of elegance. It was the perfect way to round off the evening, leaving everyone at the table satisfied.

The ambiance of the evening was as impressive as the food.

The café had been transformed with hundreds of fairy lights, colorful pom-poms, and small jam jars filled with vibrant flowers, creating a warm and intimate setting. Guests dined at long banquet tables, fostering a sense of community as they connected over delicious food.

The evening was a perfect blend of delicious food, great company, and a beautiful setting.

Waterside Cafe is open daily between 8.30am-4.30pm serving coffee, brunch, lunch and homemade cakes.
