The High Table on the High Street is no more. It was a good restaurant, definitely better than a certain restaurant/hotel further up the road but lacked atmosphere and warmth which contributed to its lack of customers.
Now though, that could all change with the opening of Marco’s Oxford, one of nine across the UK serving a menu designed and overseen by Marco Pierre White himself. Obviously the great chef is not going to be seen (or heard!) on the streets of Oxford but he does have final approval on all that goes on in those bearing his name. The menu is short but interesting, with options of a large or small plate on several of the mains. As expected, it has an Italian/New York feel with plenty of pasta and pizza but also burgers and steaks.
Dorota is the restaurant manager who has transferred from the Stratford on Avon restaurant and her favourite dish is the Chicken Milanese – spaghetti with a pomodoro sauce, topped with a crispy, breadcrumbed chicken breast and fresh tomatoes. Her description made my mouth water so that’s definitely one I’ll be trying!
The restaurant looks amazing, chic in black and white with mirrored surfaces and white linen with some walls covered in an oxblood crocodile skin effect. A massive selling point for me is the gorgeous private room which seats 8 comfortably or 9 if needed. Similar decor in here but with a touch more glam factor and glass walls so people can see you and wonder how important you are! Obviously Bitten are going to be using that very soon…
Officially, the restaurant opens tomorrow, Thursday 11th February but they have been open over the last few days for a soft launch. Dining times will be from 7am when they will serve breakfast all through the day and evening sessions. Tables are booking fast so get in there quick, either by calling 01865 248695 or via their website at Marco’s Oxford
