Hot Choc in Ox: a mission to try them all 2.0

19th January 2024 by Chiara Nunzet Leave a Comment Best For, Blog, NewsCENTRAL OXFORD/ HOTCHOCOLATE/ INDEPENDENTS/ NEWS/ Oxford

Jericho Cafe, Walton Street

This place is dangerously close to my office and it takes a lot of willpower not to buy all their bagels, all the time. This hot choc was lovely, not too milky, very smooth and the chocolate sprinkled on the top formed little yummy chunks of chocolate. The brownie/cake/general treat offering is so difficult to resist but I was dreaming of dunking something carby and sweet into this bad boy.

Knoops, Turl Street

I went for the 64% (Peru) which claims to have ‘fresh and fruity notes of raisins and dried figs’. I have to say, this is a beautiful hot chocolate. It gave Cadbury’s fruit and nut vibes – which happens to be one of my fave chocolate bars, so ticked all the boxes. It’s a little pricier, but the variety of hot chocs on offer is commendable. The hot choc was blended perfectly, super smooth and fluffy, and it stayed hot for ages – win, win, win!

Panneokek Cafe, South Parade

Even more dangerous, when a place is right across the road from your flat! The lovely Alex has recently opened this pop-up coffee shop, which transforms into Bia in the afternoons and evenings. From others’ experience I can confirm the coffee is good, but as a hot choc gal myself I had to try. This was the first hot choc in ages where I’ve actually sat in to enjoy it, which meant the bonus of a bowl-sized mug to drink it from. This hot choc was dark and rich, just how I like it!

Bonus: Moose got a puppacino, his review: pawfect.

Steamhouse Cafe, Little Clarendon Street

The most OTT hot chocolate I’ve ever had – a Lotus s’more sat on top of a cream and chocolate-laden hot choccy. Not one for the faint-hearted. The toasted s’more was delicious, the crunchy, sugary pick-me-up I needed on this particularly cold Monday morning. The actual hot chocolate was a little on the milky side for me, though.

Opera Cafe, Walton Street

Whenever marshmallows are offered, I go into full feral child mode. Yes, I am 30 years old, and yes I will have cream and marshmallows every time. They melted deliciously into the molten chocolate, oozing with every mouthful. After I’d ordered I spied the menu also offered a ‘Nutella hot choc’ so will need to go back asap for this, will report back.

Do not fear, this isn’t the last of my hot chocolate escapades, there are still places on my list. Are there any places you’d recommend that I haven’t covered yet? Let me know in the comments!
