Christmas at Crosstown: Special edition doughnuts

16th December 2024 by Jacqui Thorndyke Leave a Comment AD - Gifted, BlogBAKERIES/ CENTRAL OXFORD/ CHRISTMAS/ DOUGHNUTS/ Oxford/ shops

OK, let’s talk doughnuts. But not just any doughnuts, let’s talk Christmas Doughnuts! Yes, you heard right, the team at Crosstown invited us to taste some special edition festive flavours, and you know we’re always on call for something sweet.

Christmas Doughnuts at Crosstown

So let’s talk about the flavour options, of which there are three:

Chocolate & Orange: an orange glazed ring doughnut with a layer of chocolate ganache on the inside, then topped off with chocolate shards, a dusting of gold dust and candied orange

Vegan Pear & Mulled Spice: vegan sourdough topped with mulled spice glaze, filled with sweet pear compote and dressed with more gold dust and candied orange peel

Vegan Speculoos: vegan sourdough filled full of speculoos ganache, then topped with a spiced biscuit glaze and bedazzled with gold dust and iced biscuit pieces

I had to order the kids some mini doughnuts just to buy me some time to take photos of the main event, but my mouth was drooling while shooting these.

The base dough (vegan or otherwise) is light and pillowy, the fillings ample, and the flavours present. I’m not naturally a big fan of a chocolate and orange pairing (don’t @ me), but this was a surprising success. The flavours didn’t overpower and, instead, melted well together.

I found the richness a little overpowering with the volume of filling in the Mulled Spice and Speculoos, but you cannot fault them for their generosity. Not a meagre filling in sight!

The topping textures added welcome contrast, and the combinations of flavours felt well-balanced. Overall, and enjoyable festive treat for something special.

Christmas Doughnuts are available individually for £5.75 each. Gift Boxes are also available in a range of sizes.
