Bitten Bites: Westgate Social Rebrands with Street Food

Hot off the heels of Bitten Street coming to an end, Westgate Social, the basement food court at Westgate Oxford shopping centre, has installed new ‘Street Food’ signage ahead of a relaunch featuring the addition of mobile street food traders.

Rola Wala packed up in early June, the first brand to leave Westgate Social since it’s launch in February, leaving behind Shwawa, Salt ‘N’ Sauce, Benito’s Hat, Ned’s Noodle Bar and Tommi’s Burger Joint. People have since blamed the food court looking dark and uninviting.

On 4th June, the Indian-inspired restaurant business, that first started as a street food trader, tweeted the following message:

Unfortunately last night we closed Rola Wala Oxford, not what we’d envisioned when we opened last year! We’d like to thank our customers, staff, and friends that made Rola Wala Oxford special…Good news – we are open as normal in London, Leeds, and Birmingham from 11am today!

Westgate Social to become the next Trinity Kitchen?

Journalist Richard Johnson, who runs British Street Food and the British Street Food Awards that visited Oxford in 2015, will be partnering with Westgate Social using a formula tried and tested in Trinity Kitchen Leeds, which “rotates six new street food vans every eight weeks … alongside permanent eateries: Chicago Rib Shack, Chip + Fish, Duck ’n Roll, Pho, Rola Wala and Tortilla and Absurd Bird.”

Westgate Social remains open for business, with Ned’s Noodle Bar already reporting an upturn from the bright, new signage. Let us know what you think of the planned change and if you plan to visit the new format. We’ll keep you posted on the new addition, you might even see some Bitten Street favourites!
