Burgers can be anything from distinctly underwhelming, to utterly pleasurable. Personally, they’re not my favourite food to eat, but if I find one good enough, I make an exception.

The Dodo Pub Co has historically produced one of those exceptions – since back in early 2014 when I recommended their Angry Texan burger on my old blog.

When I do eat a burger, I like it with cheese, full of flavour, nice and juicy, and not too heavy on the bun – no overlaps required thanks – and with plenty of pickles. I also don’t want to be left with that bloated and greasy feeling some burgers bestow. Dodo delivers on these fundamentals.

So, what do you get with a Dodo DIY Burger Kit?

  • Instructions
  • 4 x Dodo beef patties
  • 4 x seeded brioche buns
  • 4 x cheese slices
  • 2 x pots of Dodo burger mayonnaise
  • 2 x pots of Dodo pickled red onion

You’ll also need:

  • Vegetable oil (I used coconut)
  • Lettuce
  • Tomato
  • A pan for frying
  • A warm plate for resting the meat
  • And napkins for catching juice!

The burgers were extremely easy to cook and build, with the instructions leaflet also recommending a build order. The burgers themselves took 6-10 minutes in total, depending on if you wanted pink or well done meat.

With various child-related distractions going on in the background, mine fell somewhere between the two, but remained nice and juicy. I also managed (I refer you to previous distractions) to slightly overcook my buns (ouch), but it didn’t hamper the final result particularly badly.

The result was a tasty burger, well-crusted on the outside with char and seasoning, a bun that held together well – maintaining the integrity of the fillings without soaking up too much oil. The overall flavour was good, the burger mayo pairing nicely with the pickled onions, and a big thumbs up from the full family.
