Oxford Street Food is Finally Happening

29th September 2014 by Becca Chaplin Leave a Comment BlogEVENTS/ STREET FOOD

You may have noticed us mention once or twice that we quite like street food here at Bitten HQ. In fact, we like it so much we got bored of waiting for street food to reach Oxford, and organised a street food festival ourselves.

Other cities have regular street food events, such as Kerb and Bishopsgate Market in London or the events held along the Southbank. Birmingham has BrumYumYum and Digbeth Dining Club. Cambridge has foodPark Cam so it’s about time Oxford got in on the act. But street food is too often associated with kebab vans and those fry up vans that pull up in roadside laybys. That is absolutely not what it’s about! Proper street food is an awesome van or a stall, passionate chefs and huge flavours of great food at good prices. We like to call it pimped up food!

For example, you won’t get a flabby, floppy cheeseburger at one of our events; you’ll get a slab of pure minced beef steak with nothing added except a sprinkling of salt and pepper served in a real bread roll with fresh salad and proper cheese. Or you could have a venison burger or a brioche bun with strips of marinated steak, cheese and crispy Serrano ham. Pizza isn’t normal pizza. It’s woodfired with real Italian cheese, homemade tomato sauce and fresh toppings. Your fish and chips are crispy battered goujons with chunky, crispy, fluffy chips begging to be soused with malt vinegar. Dumplings are stuffed full of amazing flavours. Hot dogs are made with real meat, not mechanically removed sludge and have a good bite to them. The coffee is roasted locally and then made to order how you like it and the cakes are sinfully good.

All these smells, flavours and sounds including our DJ, combine to make a street food festival a full on experience and one you don’t want to miss out on. So come on down to Oxford Castle and try it all for yourself!

#BittenStreet, Oxford’s very first popup street food market will be taking over Oxford Castle Quarter on Saturday 4th October, from 12-5pm. With almost 20 handpicked street food and drinks traders stationed all around the castle site, your only challenge will be deciding which amazing food to eat next!

We’ll be shining the spotlight on each of our individual traders this week on Facebook and on Twitter, so make sure you stay tuned.
