Bitten loves cake. I mean, we really, really love cake. Fruit cake, cream cakes, cupcakes, layer cakes, muffins, brownies, tray bakes, macarons, pastries and scones (but not fruit ones), bring them all to us! And we especially love that more and more places in Oxford are selling cake from independent bakers.
Cakes look beautiful. They are aesthetically pleasing and grouped together well they can look stunning. But, because there’s always a but, we do have one little issue.
When you buy that gorgeously decorated, moist sponge, creamy filling and it’s *gasp* dry. Dry because it’s been exposed for heaven knows how long. Crusty and crumbly. Poked by little grubby fingers, coughed and sneezed on, landed on by flying things. The disappointment. You’ve been waiting patiently until 3pm* for that afternoon lull when you slowly devour the rich sweetness and then your mouth is suddenly devoid of all moisture and your tongue is stuck to the roof of your mouth with claggy buttercream. Such a disappoinment.
So, cake sellers please don’t deprive us of those brief moments of sugary happiness. Buy some cloches!
*3pm never happens by the way. The cake is lucky if it makes it onto a plate and fork….
