As our followers on social media, or eagle-eyed residents of OX4, may have already spotted there’s a new popup in town. Hyper Ramen launched a six-month residency at GAF tonight, with owner and chef, Guy Hatfield, at the helm.
Well, I call him chef because he’ll be doing the cooking, but he’s actually a well-established DJ with a love for ramen!
Having spent a lot of time in Japan, Guy developed a bit of an addiction to ramen, trying out lots of it from many different places. He’s been making his own broth for a while now and decided to take the plunge and make it for the masses.
In his own words “it’s authentic miso Ramen based soup but will have a British twist and drinks pairings too”.
The minimalist menu consists of four ramen options – a signature ‘double dip’ chicken and fish broth with pork belly in regular (£10) and hot (£10.50); a vegan ramen (£10) consisting of tofu in a shitake mushroom and miso broth; and a ‘full English’ ramen (£10.50), with crispy bacon, slow cooked tomato, poached egg and watercress in the double dip broth.
For starters, you’ll have a choice of pork or vegetable gyoza (£5.75), lightly battered chicken wings (£5.75) coated in sticky mirin sauce, spring onions and sesame oil, or edamame beans with sea salt (£4.50).
Local brewery Tap Social features on the drinks list, alongside Japanese beers, variations of sake, a cider, a quad on wines and a few softs.
Opening hours will be 5-11pm Wednesday to Sunday, with the intention to open at lunchtimes too and table reservations will be taken.
