Samphire, asparagus and mooli are not what most people expect to find in a food bank; but Oxford Food Hub is different.
Most food banks rely on donations of packaged goods, the Hub is different; collecting unsold and otherwise wasted fresh food from local supermarkets and wholesalers, delivering free of charge to 100+ Oxfordshire charities. Thanks to surplus from many different suppliers, the Hub offers a wide range of fresh produce, bakery and dairy products. Chefs in charities the Hub supports have learnt to be creative, adjusting their plans according to the availability of ingredients.
With a team of 120 volunteers, Oxford Food Hub supports a range of local organisations. These include mental health charities, homeless services, youth groups, refugee charities and primary schools. The food the Hub provides help these organisations save money on nutritious food for their clients, educate people about cooking and nutrition, and create a community around cooking and sharing food.
