Sometimes, you spot a dish on Instagram that you just have to try. For me recently, it was the fondue pizza below. A collaboration between Pizza Pilgrims and The Cheese Bar (which began life as The Cheese Truck), the pizza is currently a limited edition special, but I’m seriously campaigning for it to be a regular on the menu!

So, obviously, we had to go try it. Fully prepared to eat large quantities of cheese and carbs, we steeled ourselves for the task at hand, then ordered a token gesture side salad and a fondue pizza to share. We assumed it would be pretty heavy going, what with all that cheese – Cornish Gouda and a Cotswold Hard cheese blended with Italian mozzarella, to be exact. ‘La Fonduta’, as it’s named, also comes with a ricotta-stuffed crust, and topped with prosciutto, balsamic onion and Cornichons for dipping.
I’m pleased to tell you it was absolutely, 100%, not too much.
In fact, it was bloody delicious. I imagine it would be tough to finish a whole one, but as a sharer it was perfection. The cheese blend was beautiful – not too rich, not too sharp, not too mellow. Our only criticisms were a) the cheese cooled too fast for it to be properly dunkable, and b) we could have done with more cornichons etc.
But honestly, that wouldn’t put us off in the slightest. We even had room to try out some pudding from My Cookie Dough downstairs on our way home! See below 🍪👇

Holy crap this was good 🍪🍦 Because while you’re already in town testing out a fondue pizza, why WOULDN’T you follow it with an Oreo cookie (crispy on the outside, chewy on the inside), with buttercream and vanilla ice cream 🤷♀️ I didn’t manage the whole thing, it’s pretty damn rich, but you can take it away to eat at home later. The other half was happy to help me eat mine! #oxfordfood #oxfordfoodie #cookiedough #mycookiedough #puddingbeatme #westgateoxford #sharer #cookie #buttercream #oreo #oreocookie
‘La Fonduta’ in Hannah’s words…
Basically, my heart is fairly easily won. Huge pile of cheese on a pizza, you say? Sign me up. I’d been salivating over the pictures of The Fondue Pizza from Pizza Pilgrims that kept popping up on my timeline, so I was only delighted to get a chance to try it for myself. Along with a token salad (I’m all about the balance) the pizza was perfect for sharing between two for a very decadent weekday lunch. Unsurprisingly, it was delicious: I was particularly gooey-eyed over the ricotta-stuffed crust, which was ridiculously tasty, but each whole slice was a cheesey delight. My one tiny quibble would be that ‘fondue’ was a bit of a misnomer – as you can see from the picture, this reached us as a slightly melty cheese pizza, rather than a pile of liquid fondue goodness. You couldn’t have dunked anything in there. That said, if it had been a true fondue texture you’d have a tough time eating it like a pizza, so I see the need for balance. Overall, I’d say it’s definitely worth getting yourself down to Pizza Pilgrims to try the special before it disappears on 1st March. If you like cheese – and really, who doesn’t – then you won’t be disappointed.
‘La Fonduta’ is available at all Pizza Pilgrims pizzerias until 1st March (except Swingers and Westfield)
