Word reached us yesterday of a new Thai restaurant called Thaikhun opening in town, George Street to be specific. We’ve already got a few Thai restaurants, Chiang Mai being the first that springs to mind in the centre of town (yes, obviously I haven’t forgotten Oli’s Thai, I’m just thinking more central!) and then Angrid Thai, At Thai, Bangkok House, Sasi’s Thai and The Old Tom. They’re all fine but, par for the course in Oxford, there’s nothing particularly exciting about.
Anyway, a new Thai restaurant might change all that. It’s owned by Thai Leisure Group, who started off with Chaophraya in Leeds, before extending to an 11 strong. Now they’ve launched Thaikhun with two branches, in Aberdeen and Manchester and closer to home right here in Oxford at the end of April. Then they’re opening in Cambridge in May. Yay for Oxford being first! A quick look on their website kicks off with a spinning pig – no idea what that’s all about, before a bright image of a bustling Thai street food market. Menus seem to cover everything from street food eats, to curries, noodles, stir-fries and grilled meats. Prices are fairly reasonable with steaks being the most expensive at £16 quid.
Thaikhun will be occupying the recently and somewhat suddenly closed Cleaver site. We’ll keep you informed with opening dates and obviously we’ll give you our opinion as soon as we can! Time will tell if they can survive the curse of Threeways House…
