For the second instalment in our Bitten Streets series, let’s head up north to Summertown and give some love to South Parade. This one-way street running from Banbury to Woodstock Road is easy to miss if you are driving by. But it’s definitely worth a detour for its food and drink offerings, and the Bitten team are regular visitors. Don’t let the slightly scruffy first impression put you off!
Coffee time!
Your introduction to South Parade is likely to be the Colombia Coffee roasters, which is right on the corner. This independent, family-run business features single-origin, 100% Arabica coffee, with a focus on ethical and sustainable production.
It’s an inviting and buzzy space, full of people enjoying the food as well as the hot drinks. In addition to the sandwiches, empanadas, and baked goods, they also have an everyday brunch offer.
Casual dining
There are three different options for an informal meal. The first is Kopitiam, a casual, no-frills spot serving up delicious Malaysian street food. They have a wide range of tasty dishes, so go with a group and share if you can.
I’m always tempted by the Char Kway Teow noodles and the dim sum: every time! And do try one of their distinctive coffee drinks while you’re there.
If you’re in the mood for Italian fare, head over to Mamma Mia Pizzeria. Established in 1981 (though they recently moved to larger premises next door), this is the ‘grande dame’ of South Parade.
It’s family-friendly, often chock-a-block with inter-generational groups who’ve been eating there since their grownup kids were little, though welcoming to everyone. Despite the name, their pasta game is strong as well.
Across the street, sleek newcomer Bia (on the site of the old El Rincon) specialises in small plates paired with a careful selection of cocktails and wines.
Check out their website for deals and updates on the menu. In January I spied some hourly cocktail deals including ‘rum o-clock’ at 6pm.
The critics’ choice
Lovely French brasserie Pompette has plenty of well-deserved accolades, including a recommendation in the Michelin Guide 2024 and two AA rosettes. It’s a warm, chic venue that caters for most dining needs in the most appetising way.
When it’s date night, you can splurge on a three-course meal or opt for a special like Wednesday’s poulet frites-and-wine at £40 for two.
At lunchtime, there’s a very reasonable prix-fixe menu. And for anyone planning a special celebration, the elegant private dining room upstairs is stunning.
Wine time!
If you’re in the mood for fine wine, South Parade has you covered. At one end, there’s the independent merchant Grape Minds with a carefully curated selection of bottles to take home.
And just around the corner on Banbury Road, the Summertown Wine Bar offers quality wines by the glass, along with light bites and nibbles. Founded by the Grape Minds team, this sleek venue also hosts music evenings, wine tastings, and collaborations.
Chiara recently attended a very successful event partnered with Table 13, and I’m looking forward to an upcoming evening with the Creation Theatre Company.
Shopping for treats…
Finally, South Parade has one of the three branches of Oxford’s independent Wild Honey store. This community-minded hub has local, organic, and ethical food products of all kinds.
I regularly pop in to stock up on grains, lentils, and herbal teas. They also sell bread from the Modern Baker, whose previous Summertown café we sorely miss.
