In case you’d forgotten, or that calendar reminder hasn’t popped up yet, it’s Father’s Day this Sunday. We’ve rounded up some great local offers and event, plus alternatives to the standard Father’s Day Sunday lunch and personalised BBQ apron *eye rolls*.
Daddy Sized Feasts
We love a good Sunday roast (you can read our favourites here), just not all the time. If you fancy a change but don’t want tiny portions, check these bad boys out.
The Chester steak platter HAS to feature. Order yourself a whopping big platter of meat, chips and seasonal veg to share between 2, 3 or 5. Just don’t blame us if you get meat juice down your chin! The Chester also do brilliant veggie options, they used to do a veggie version of the platter in fact, plus they do a cracking nut wellington. They only serve roasts and maybe fish & chips on a Sunday, so take Daddy another day if it’s the platter you’re after.
The Breakfast Club serves up some seriously big portions of food. Pancake stacks that will take you a while to finish, and full English feasts that’ll leave you with meat sweats. In addition, they do a great offer for pensioners – with 50% off any breakfast club classic dish. Full menu here.
Dirty Bones – well, what can we say about this one. Not a place to visit without an empty stomach. Big portions of rich and rib-sticking American food like the ‘Mac Daddy’, a double brisket & dry aged steak burger topped with pulled beef short rib, mac & cheese and espresso-spiked BBQ sauce on a seeded brioche. They do also offer the ‘bleeds like real meat’ Moving Mountains vegan burger too. Yeah, no hunger pains here.
The Rusty Bicycle is the best place to go for a chilled out pub vibe with great grub. All those daddies will love the combination of beer, pizza and burgers that the Rusty serves up, while making them still feel cool and ‘down with the kids’. Great options for vegan dads too.
Pie at The Magdalen Arms – Jay Raynor raved about it, and rightly so. The Maggie does sharing food brilliantly – from big hunks of roast meat to cowboy-esque pies. Throw on some boots and cut offs, hop on that saddle and gallop over to Iffley Road.
Go full-on caveman over a big old plate of fried chicken and hot wings at Big Society. Great cocktails, beer and BBQ food make for party time in my eyes. Well, minus the beer for me, but I’ll happily stick to BBQ and cocktails.
Father’s Day Offers & Events
The Pointer in Brill, who we reviewed recently, is planning to offer full roast dinner with vegetarian options. They will also be serving pub classics like fish & chips and sausage & mash, priced from £16 for mains and £10 for starters. They also serve an excellent full English breakfast too, made with fab local produce.
Cinnamon Kitchen Oxford is offering a six-dish sharing menu for £29 each, including a seasonal cocktail on arrival. While it might be the poshest curry you’ll have in Oxford, the flavours are exquisite and for this price point well worth dressing smart for. Full menu here.
BrewDog is offering a free meal up to the value of £13 for Dad’s, but booking is essential. Full details on their Facebook event page.
Don’t just grab the nearest bottle of plonk off a shelf from the generic supermarket, pick up a proper nice bottle of wine from the experts at Vine on Cowley Road or Grape Minds in Summertown. Make them do all the hard work and pick something for you 😉
Waddesdon Manor is offering a ‘gentleman’s afternoon tea’ for Father’s Day, priced at £27. The sample menu features Yorkshire parkin & stilton, pork pie & piccalilli, burger slider, fish goujons with sweet chilli, honey & mustard glazed sausage pinwheel, wild mushroom soup & truffle cream. Full details on their website.
Disclaimer – yes, I know not all Dads like big plates of food, but mine does 🙂 Happy Father’s Day Dad! xx
