Alphonso Mango Season at Permit Room

31st May 2026 by Chiara Nunzet Leave a Comment AD - Invite, BlogCENTRAL OXFORD/ Oxford/ REVIEW

The Alphonso mango is only available for a few weeks between May and June, and Permit Room make the most of this every year.

With just one week left to try the special Mango Kheer dessert (ending 7th June) here’s a round up of a recent meal at one of our fave spots in Oxford.

Dishoom and Permit Room celebrate this mango era every year by showcasing their dishes featuring mango, as well as introducing some limited edition treats. Luckily for us – a lot the mango dishes are available year-round: mango lassi, mango lassi punch cocktail, mango soft-serve. But the special – the mango kheer dessert (freshly chopped Alphonso mango atop a mango rice pudding style dessert) is only available until 7 June – so move quick.

The mango lassi punch was UNREAL. A totally clear drink, made with clarified mango yoghurt, it was so refreshing and full of flavour. It’s made with rum, but you don’t taste it much (could be dangerous) it’s just super flavourful and I’m already keen to go back for another. If you liked the Mirror Margarita – you’ll love this. It also comes in a cute litle bottle so you can pour it over the iced glass yourself.

Before we move onto the mango desserts – we obviously shared some Permit Room classics for mains.

The spinach chaat will never not be ordered, cripsy fried spinach leaves with a yoghurt and pomegranate dressing – DELISH. We also tried the kali mirch chicken salad which we hadn’t tried before, and it went down very well. It was like an Indian Caeser salad, same crunch and freshnesss but with more powerful flavours, and great to share.

We then split the chicken ruby and the prawn moilee – with rice and garlic naan to mop it all up. You can never go wrong with the chicken ruby – creamy, indulgent, packed with flavour. The prawn moilee is a nice lighter alternative, with fresh coconut and ginger flavours running through. Highly recommed sharing if you’re with a group – stops you getting food envy if someone else orders better than you.

Onto the sweets!

There were four of us, so two of us had theThere were four of us, so two of us had the mango kheer special, and two of us had the mango soft serve (served in a cone, with fennel sprinkles). You just can’t go wrong with the soft serve, the mango flavour is so strong, it’s super creamy, and after some indulgent and potentially spicy food, a cold dessert is a win. The mango kheer special is also delicious – the chopped mango is literally the best I’ve ever had in my life. PACKED with flavour. I’m not really a rice pudding fan, but the texture of this one wasn’t like your standard one, and the mango flavour running through made it very easy to eat. Highly recommend getting on this while they’re still serving.

As ever, Permit Room never disappoints.

The food goes without saying, but also the service is always 10/10 no matter what day or time you go. The mango kheer special is available until 7th June, as well as some limited edition mango merch!
