If you didn’t already know, there’s a dedicated day in the calendar celebrating the best sweet treat – it’s World Chocolate Day! Pinpointing the date chocolate was introduced to Europe in 1550, July 7th marks the start of true happiness in food-form. Including bespoke chocolates, dairy-free alternatives and the most boujee bars in town, we may surprise you with the number of independent chocolatiers Oxford has to offer for your chocolate fix.
Go gourmet for World Chocolate Day with some treats from Wicked Chocolate. An independent business with a chocolate-filled counter of decadent and indulgent flavours, you’ll find this tasty gem in the Covered Market, alongside iScream. Treat yourself to bespoke chocolates or enjoy some of their best-of-the-best boujee brands, like Prestat and Charbonnel et Walker. You can also find Booja-Booja, which means dairy-free chocolate lovers don’t have to miss out.
Plus, as Wicked open their doors again, enjoy 50% off all Easter chocolate until stock sells out!
The award-winning Rumsey’s, located on the Upper High Street in Thame, is both a delicious choccy shop and fully-fledged café. After embarking on a chocolate-fuelled journey around Europe to perfect his knowledge, Nigel Rumsey has developed his own unique chocolate blend with sustainable cocoa beans. Currently operating as a takeaway, take a trip to Thame to enjoy either their breakfasts, fresh pastries, sandwiches or toasties, as well as cakes and desserts.
Bitten’s own Hannah has been super impressed with Headington-based Coco Noir during lockdown. As well as treats so tasty that she ordered twice, the gift she’d bought for a friend arrived at her door less than 12 hours later, wrapped perfectly with a fresh flower.
This café-stroke-chocolate boutique boasts speciality Belgian chocolates with flavourings to satisfy any sweet tooth. Play it safe with their nutty or fruity options, or go wild with some chilli chocolate. Whichever takes your taste buds fancy, all options are freshly made with the finest ingredients and are perfect for gift-giving.
Linden believe in the best of both worlds: a balanced, healthy lifestyle that doesn’t forfeit a cheeky indulgence – so expect the delicious flavour, minus the high-sugar content.
With hand-crafted chocolate too good to gift (they do offer gift boxes if you truly wish), you can also bag yourself nut-based spreads as well as milk, dark and white chocolate options. However, expect to pay a little more for novel flavours and more waist-line friendly ingredients.
The newly award-winning CoCo Chemistry in the Westgate is yet to be explored by the Bitten lot. However, they combine chemistry knowledge with making quality chocolate – so expect fun, original flavours and designs. Cosy up with one of their chocolate ‘slabs’ or alternatively, you can gift one with their ‘send a hug’ hampers. Discover dreamy caramel sauce jars for a DIY dessert-vibe, as well as truffles, tea, coffee and hot chocolate.
This independent artisan patisserie never fails to satisfy a sweet craving. The Summertown based Gatineau offers impressive-looking cakes, breads and savouries, all made by Herve Gatineau himself. So, whether you deliver to your door or take a trip to the café, treat your taste buds to the finest chocolates in all the land – including homemade passionfruit discs, chocolate caramelized pecans, and pre-made boxes of bonbons.
Sourced from some of the finest chocolate makers in the world, the journey behind this fine-chocolate company was a self-taught one. Not only are the handmade bars, individual chocolates and sharing slabs all from ethical producers, but they’re all colouring and e-number free! Whilst there’s no current delivery service from these guys, you can pick up your fresh chocolate fix from North Parade Produce Store and Worton Kitchen Garden Farm Shop.
